Tragic history of Lithuanian people deportations was revealed to Japanese by the movie “The Excursionist”
Lithuanian movie “The Excursionist” (director Audrius Juzenas, screenwriter Pranas Morkus) debuted in European Union moves festival “EU Films Days 2016”, Japan on 22th of June. It was called “Journey of Maria, 1948” (マリヤ、1948年の旅路) in Japanese.
“This incredible movie, based on real facts, shows tragic history pages of Lithuania” - said ambassador Egidijus Meilūnas during the opening speech of this movie in crowded National Film Center, Tokyo.
In order to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the mass deportations of Lithuanian people, the Embassy of Lithuania in Japan presented the movie “The Excursionist” in the prestigious film festival “EU Films Days 2016”. Movie audience was really interested in both the touching story of the survivor girl, and the overall historical context of the movie. Viewers even inquired about the further fate of the 11 year old girl, who not only managed to escape from the freight train exiling Lithuanians to the Siberia, but also successfully travelled a 6000 km dangerous journey back to home. Furthermore, the audience really admired the progress and development Lithuania has managed to achieve over the 26 years of freedom from the Soviet Union repressions.
“EU Film Days” is a traditional festival that allows Japanese audience to see the best of European cinema, which exposes European Union countries’ cultural diversity and experience.
According to festival organizers in Japan, “The Excursionist” is one of the most impressive movies among EU countries of this year’s festival.
Japanese audience will have the possibility to see “The Excursionist” movie three more times both in Tokyo and Kyoto:
