Lithuanian Craftsmanship exhibition open in Tokyo

February 4th marks the opening of “Lithuania no teshigoto ten” Lithuanian Craftsmanship exhibition in Minato park Shibaura, 1st fl. Atrium.

The exhibition introduces traditional Lithuanian sache belts made by one of the most famous lithuanian sache weavers Matilda Jucienė and paper cuttings by Klaidas Navickas, Odeta Bražėnienė, Laimutė Fedosejeva, Sigita Milvidienė, Laima Skipitienė, Irena Katinienė, Danutė Aleknienė and Aurelija Končienė.

Historically, sashes had a variety of uses in Lithuania, accompanying a Lithuanian person from birth to death.  Nowadays the use of sashes has dramatically decreased, yet from time to time they are still used on special occasions. Sashes are often given to honored guests or on anniversaries, used in traditional Lithuanian wedding ceremonies. Sashes serve not only as treasured memory of important events but also as a bridge from one generation to another.

The exhibition also includes paper cuttings by eight famous Lithuanian craftsman, which have captivated Japanese public during last year’s exhibition of paper cuttings. Paper cuttings come from traditional decorative paper cuttings, which had a practical purpose. They are a significant branch of contemporary folk art, whose nature, mythology, legends and folk motives hold a mysterious link between Lithuanian and Japanese cultures.

The exhibition will last until February 18th.
