Lithuanian Artists Participate in the International Art Exhibition in Zempukuji Park and Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo

Famous Lithuanian artists Diana Radaviciute and Saulius Valius present their new works at the open air  international exhibition ”Trolls in the Park” in Zempukuji Park, Tokyo, November 3 to 23.This is the 7th edition of “Trolls in the Park” organized by NPO Nishiogi Machi Media aiming to make contemporary art more accessible to public and inviting to reflect on the relationship between the natural and urban environments.In Zenpukuji park, both Diana and Saulius gracefully integrate the surrounding environment into the art pieces that convey their respect to nature, Japan and its culture.In her work titled “Bird’s path” (the literary translation of Lithuanian name for Milky Way, that, according to the artist,  sounds very Japanese) Diana highlights the identity of the place/country by putting into the center an old sakura tree, originally supported with sticks to prevent from falling. Diana embranced the tree with her aura – the circles of white fairs floating in the air as if a line of birds.  This metaphoric image could be also interpreted as a manifestation of nature worship.Diana Radaviciute. Installation “Bird’s path”Saulius Valius with his “Black Stars” reflects on the ever changing shapes of the substance. The black coal pieces fixed to invisible lines swing in the air between the tall park trees. Coal is the transitional shape of the tree – meanwhile its accumulated energy will turn into the light again.Saulius Valius speaks of his installation “Black Stars” to the Japanese artist Ay-OThe same period as “Trolls in the Park”, Diana Radaviciute and Yoshiko Maruyama present a duo exhibition “Form in the Space between Layers” in the neighboring Youkobo Art Space gallery.  The female artists observe people living in contemporary society.In the Lithuanian part entitled “Suspension Points”, Diana reflects on the fragmentary nature of life and ephemeral character of human memory. The constant rotation of time circle is expressed through very personal reflections. Diana uses different materials - photography, linen felt, peat circles to create complex structures which being very visual arouse personal associations of the viewers.Diana Radaviciute. They work in the fields of graphics, installation, design and participate in international exhibitions all over the world since  90s. Saulius Valius has designed and installed a number  of Lithuanian pavilions at world expositions  including Zaragoza 2008, and international book fairs starting with Frankfurt 2002 for which he received award. He is devoted to promotion of Lithuanian arts to international public. For more that ten years he was annually organizing international art events and symposiums. The symposium “On the Edge 2001” enjoyed participation of more than 30 Japanese artists including famous Fluxus artist AY-O, as well as curators and gallery managers.Both Diana and Saulius are involved in active exchanges with Japanese artists. They participated in exhibitions or symposiums at Mino Paper Art Village, Abiko International Art Project, Omotesando gallery and others. This time they were invited to Japan thanks to initiative of artist Yoshiko Maruyama and Youkobo directors Hiroko and Tastuhiko Murata.
