Lithuanian Ambassador Presented Letters of Credence in Australia and New Zealand
On December 11 at the Government House in Auckland, Ambassador Dainius Kamaitis presented credentials to the Honourable Anand Satyanand, the Governor-General of New Zealand.Bilateral trade turnover between Lithuania and New Zealand amounted to 75.4 million litas for the first three quarters of 2008. The list of goods of export from Lithuania was dominated by chemicals, and wool accounted for over half of import from New Zealand.On the eve of presentation of credentials, Ambassador Kamaitis met with members of the Lithuanian community in Auckland, chaired by Gerald Sharrock.Ambassador Kamaitis is the first Lithuanian Ambassador accredited to New Zealand. Besides, a Consulate in Auckland is headed by Jurgis Peciulaitis, Honorary Consul.New Zealand’s Ambassador to Lithuania resides in Warsaw.Lithuania and New Zealand established diplomatic relations on January 10,1992.On October 2 at the Government House in Canberra, Ambassador Dainius Kamaitis presented credentials to Her Excellency Quentin Bryce, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, making him Lithuania’s first ambassador to Australia. In 2007, bilateral Lithuanian and Australian trade turnover totaled 20.82 million litas. Charcoal dominated the list of Lithuanian exported goods, while almost half of import from Australia was wool. On the eve of the presentation of credentials, Kamaitis met with members of the Lithuanian community in Canberra, headed by Jonas Mockunas. On October 3 in Sydney, another meeting with the Lithuanian community was organised at the Lithuanian club Dainava. In Melbourne, a Lithuanian Consulate is run by Andrew Zilinskas, Honorary Consul General. The Australian Ambassador to Lithuania resides in Stockholm, and a Consulate headed by Australian Honorary Consul General functions in Vilnius. Lithuania and Australia established diplomatic relations on November 6,1991.
