Lithuania thanks Japan for lending support to the ambition to join OECD
On 15 April, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius in a meeting with Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Kentaro Sonoura expressed his gratitude to Japan for supporting Lithuania’s ambition to join the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and noted that Lithuania is looking forward to mutually beneficial cooperation within the OECD.
Foreign Minister informed about the priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the United Nations Security Council in May and invited Japan to participate in the open debates on protection of journalists organized by Lithuania.
In the meeting with Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas, Sonoura discussed bilateral political relations, the dialogue between the European Union and Japan, the reform of the UN Security Council; Japan was invited to join the Working Group on Women and Democracy of the Community of Democracies. Germanas appreciated Japan’s support to Ukraine and called on its continuation in face of the conflict with Russia.
During his visit to Lithuania, the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan is attending commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the issuance of ‘Visas for Life’ to Jewish population in the Japanese Consulate in Kaunas by a Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara in1939-1940.
