Lithuania has a lot to offer to Japan
On 9 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius had conversations with representatives of Japan’s public and private sector and emphasized the achievements of our country’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector. Linkevičius also expressed his belief that the Lithuanian-Japanese cooperation would quickly gain momentum in this sphere.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister met with the Chairman of Japan-Lithuania Friendship Diet Member’s League and its other members, the Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture Yuji Kuroiwa, the Mayor of Hiratsuka (a city located in this Prefecture where the Lithuanian national team will prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games) Katsuhiro Ochiai, and with Toshiki Nakayama, Senior Executive Vice President at NTT DoCoMo.
The meetings discussed opportunities for the development of bilateral cooperation in the fields of business, culture, science and technology, sports, etc. In addition, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister participated in a press conference at the Japan National Press Club and answered the questions from reporters, who had assembled abundantly.
“Japan is a major partner of Lithuania in Asia, as regards exports, tourism and scientific cooperation. New Lithuanian-developed technology spreads around the world and now has caught the interest of major Japanese corporations. We are glad that such Lithuanian companies as Widerfi have entered the third-largest market with some of the most demanding users in the world and we look forward to the successful development of bilateral relations in the ICT sector”, said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, inviting also the leading Japanese ICT company – NTT DoCoMo – to join Lithuania’s international partners.
Japan has also become a key partner of our country in Asia in the fields of science, technology and innovation. Lithuania is one of the few countries in Europe and in the world that have signed cooperation agreements with all the three major Japanese organisations that support research – Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, Japan Science and Technology Agency, and Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences.
There is particularly great untapped potential for cooperation in the life sciences sector – 11 bilateral symposia were held in the past 2 years. These symposia attracted more than 50 Lithuanian and more than 100 Japanese scientists and entrepreneurs.
