Japan has become the leading Lithuanian export market in East and South Asia

On 28 November 2016 more than 40 Japanese businessmen, agriculture specialists and media representatives gathered at the premises of Lithuanian Embassy in Tokyo to the Seminar on Lithuanian Agriculture and Food Industry. In his introductory remarks, Ambassador of Lithuania Mr. Egidijus Meilūnas gladly admitted that Japan is becoming one of major trading partners of Lithuania in Asia as Japanese consumers are increasingly interested in high quality Lithuanian food and agricultural products.

In January-September of 2016, if compared to the same period of 2015, exports of Lithuanian agricultural products to Japan had grown more than 8 times and reached EUR 70 million. Major product groups were tobacco products, pastries, milk products, snails.

Mr. Rolandas Taraškevičius, Director of European Union and International Affairs Department of Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture, and Mr. Žilvinas Ilevičius, Lithuanian Veterinary and Phyto-sanitary Attaché to the European Union, presented Lithuanian agriculture and food industry potential and food safety to potential Japanese importers, who gathered at the Embassy’s Seminar. Participants showed great interest in the first comprehensive publication about Lithuanian agriculture and food industry in Japanese language and have enthusiastically tasted best Lithuanian food products, proposed to Japanese market.

Japan is also a leading country in terms of Lithuanian export volumes to East and South Asian region, surpassing such countries as China, India and others. Overall Lithuanian export to Japan has increased almost 3 times during January-September 2016, if compared to the same period of 2015, and reached EUR 88,7 million. In addition to agricultural products, Lithuanian exports to Japan consist of lasers, medical and optical devices, furniture, linen products and others.

Export promotion activities are inseparable part of Lithuanian Embassy’s everyday work. Above-mentioned Seminar on Agriculture and Food Industry is already the third seminar in 2016, organized in cooperation with Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture. Annually, Embassy organizes around 30 events, dedicated to presentation and promotion of Lithuanian production and opportunities to do business with Lithuania.
