International Holokaust Remberance Day
On Jan 26 Ambassador Aurelijus Zykas, together with Ambassadors of Germany, Poland and the EU, Consul-General of the US in Osaka and the diplomatic representatives from the Netherlands and Israel, took part in the ceremony to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The ceremony was held at the Holocaust Education Center in Fukuyama for the second consecutive year at the initiative of the Embassy of Lithuania and the Honorary Consul General of Lithuania Mr. Shigehiro Komaru.
Holocaust is undoubtedly one of the darkest chapters in human history. In his remarks, Ambassador Zykas stressed how important it is to learn from the past and to remember the horrors committed. Even more important is to be inspired by heroes like Chiune Sugihara who risked their own safety to save others. Chiune Sugihara was a Japanese consul in Kaunas, who saved thousands of Jewish lives by issuing Japanese visas, which made it possible for them to escape the war torn Lithuania. This is the lesson to keep in our hearts - that even in the darkest of times we must continue to fight for the light.
