International Holocaust Remembrance Day was marked in Fukuyama by an event organized under the initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania and the Honorary Consul General of Lithuania in Fukuyama Shigehiro Komaru, together with the closest allies and partners of both Japan and Lithuania - Ambassadors of the United States, Poland and Israel, and the Consul General of Germany in Osaka.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Zykas underlined the ever-growing importance of commemorating the victims of one of the greatest human tragedies and to ensure that their testimonies live on, with the last of the Holocaust survivors passing away. It is essential to create and engage in educational activities and initiatives.
Ambassador Zykas recalled the universality of evil of totalitarianism and reminded that the end of the Second World War did not bring freedom to all European states, as many were still subjected to occupation, repressions and brutality for 50 more years. Ambassador noted dangerous parallels between the historical revisionism and manipulation of the memory of the Holocaust that we observe carried out by Russia today. This is why it is imperative to enshrine the sacred memory of those deceased in Holocaust and to unite as international community in speeding up the efforts of fighting against propaganda, desinformation and misinformation.
