Foreign Minister of Japan T. Motegi visits Lithuania
Japanese Foreign minister T. Motegi paid a working visit to Lithuania. He met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania G. Landsbergis, Prime Minister I. Šimonytė, visited Sugihara House in Kaunas.The Foreign Ministers' meeting focused on bilateral relations between Lithuania and Japan, cooperation within international organisations, regional and international issues.
"Japan -- a strategic partner of the EU and NATO -- is also Lithuania’s most important partner in Asia. We are ready to make every effort to deepen our bilateral cooperation in all areas and formats, including cooperation in multilateral fora. We will strive to take our bilateral relations to a qualitatively new level of strategic partnership," said Landsbergis.
During the meeting, special attention was given to the development of bilateral economic relations, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the EU-Japan Economic Partnership and Strategic Partnership Agreements, as well as the EU’s partnership with Japan in the fields of sustainable connectivity and quality infrastructure.
In addition, the Foreign Ministers discussed the current situation in Eastern Europe, important issues of the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the threats posed by climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, Lithuania and Japan celebrate the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of their diplomatic relations. Next year will mark a centenary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations.
