Embassy's Representative Visited Hamaoka NPP

On 18 May the Embassy’s representative together with the other members of the EU nuclear contact group visited Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Shizuoka prefecture where they were kindly accepted by its operating company Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

Diplomats from the EU received a thorough introduction on the Hamaoka NPP and earthquake and tsunami countermeasures being implemented there in order to avoid the repetition of disaster similar to the one in the Fukushima NPP. The Hamaoka NPP is located on the coastal area where the combined Tokai/Tonankai/Nankai earthquake is anticipated to occur.

Visitors had an opportunity to see by themselves the construction site of sea wall for tsunami prevention and some other facilities of NPP, e.g. Main Control Room Gallery, Reactor Building of Unit 5, etc.

Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. is Japan’s third largest electric power company. It serves an area nearly 39,000 km2 in 5 prefectures of Central Japan (Chubu region), home to 16 mln. people and known for many world-class Japanese industries. At the moment 5 units of the Hamaoka NPP as all other nuclear reactors in Japan are non-operational.
