Day of the State and the Millennium of Lithuania Celebrated in Tokyo with the Opening of Picture Exhibition Unseen Lithuania

On July 6, the Embassy held a reception at the Hillside Forum in Tokyo on the occasion of the Day of the State and the Millennium Anniversary of Lithuania, coinciding with the opening of the Picture Exhibition UNSEEN LITHUANIA by Marius Jovaisa.It was attended by Satsuki Eda, President of the Upper House of the Diet, and Akiko Santo, Vice-President, Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as numerous representatives of the parliament, government institutions, business, culture, media and the Lithuanian community.  At the opening of the event, the National Anthems of Lithuania and Japan were be sung by the Choir of Kunitachi College of Music High School which held charity concerts in Lithuania earlier this year to support the memorial museum of the Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara in Kaunas. In the welcoming address, Ambassador Dainius Kamaitis noted that it has not been until Lithuania joined the EU that the Lithuania-Japan relationship began to produce substantial results. The the first visit to Lithuania by the Japanese foreign minister Aso in 2006 paved the way for the epoch-making visit of Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko in 2007. And the appointment of the first resident Japanese ambassador to Vilnius last year highlighted the rising bilateral ties.  In his congratulatory remarks, Foreign Minister Nakasone said that both countries were deepening cooperation in the fields of common interest, noting in particular the bilateral cooperation in coordination of the development assistance projects in the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor Province, Afghanistan. He reassured that the Japan-Lithuania relations had a great possibility for further development, and wished the bilateral ties a continued outstanding success.  Later the Choir of Kunitachi College of Music High School sang a Lithuanian song "Summer Bird" by Gintaras Venislavas which conveyed the spirit and the beauty of the week-long Millennium Song Festival in Lithuania. Photographer Marius Jovaisa introduced his exhibition UNSEEN LITHUANIA, followed by a toast given by Hidekatsu Fujii, Lithuanian Honorary Consul in Sapporo.
