Conference "The Humanitarian Legacy and Lessons of Sugihara Chiune"

On December 9, the Lithuanian Embassy in Japan and Waseda University organized a Conference "The Humanitarian Legacy and Lessons of Sugihara Chiune", dedicated to Ch. Sugihara’s 120th birth anniversary and 80th anniversary of the issuance of "visas for life". More than 300 participants from Japan, US and other countries joined the Conference online (recording of the Conference is available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/2Mu6Knt-k-I).

Participants of the conference were addressed by President of Waseda University Professor A. Tanaka, Ambassador of Lithuania G. Varvuolis, Ambassadors of Israel and Poland to Japan.  In his address, Ambassador G. Varvuolis stressed that memory of Sugihara is respected and cherished in Lithuania, talked about importance of his humanitarian lessons at present time and noted the significance of Sugihara's heritage as a connecting link between Lithuania and Japan.

The main presentations were made by Lithuanian historian Dr. S. Strelcovas and Professor H. Komori of Waseda University, and video “Excursion at Sugihara House in Kaunas”, created at the initiative of the Embassy, was screened.

Waseda University is Ch. Sugihara’s Alma Mater and one of Japan’s leading higher education institutions.
