Chiune Sugihara’s commemorations in Nagoya
On October 22-23 Ambassador G. Varvuolis visited City of Nagoya, where he took part in Chiune Sugihara’s commemorations. G. Varvuolis paid tribute to Ch. Sugihara by participating in “Chiune run” together with local sports enthusiasts. He visited three Sugihara-related schools – Heiwa Elementary, Mizuhogaoka Junior High and Zuiryo High School – and met with their teachers and students, and has a meeting at Meijo University.
On October 23, G. Varvuolis attended a special concert by Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Ch. Sugihara's visas for life, which was also attended by the Mayor of Nagoya Takashi Kawamura.
Both the Mayor and the Ambassador in their respective speeches underlined the importance of Sugihara for bilateral relations between Lithuania and Japan and his lesson of humanity and conscience for the young generations. The cello soloist at the concert was Iris Regev, descendant from the Jewish community of Lithuania.
