On 2 March in Jerusalem, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with Israel’s President Isaac Herzog and the Foreign Minister Eli Cohen.

“I am visiting Israel in really turbulent times. We are aware of the threats facing Israel, so we will continue to consistently pursue international sanctions against Iran and other authoritarian regimes that have been on the side of Russia in its brutal war against Ukraine,” Landsbergis said at the meeting with the President of Israel.

Israeli President Herzog thanked Lithuania for its consistent support and contribution to security in the Middle East region and on the European continent.

During the meeting, Lithuanian and Israeli diplomats discussed bilateral relations, the world’s security situation and the international community’s efforts to help Ukraine fight against Russia’s brutal aggression.

“If we do not focus  on Ukraine’s victory now, the already restless world may lose its main pillar — the rules-based order. However, we must not give in to the fear of Russia’s collapse and the illusion that Russia cannot be defeated. It can and must be defeated,” Landsbergis said.

After the meeting, the Lithuanian and Israeli diplomats signed the Programme of Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the Government of the State of Israel in the fields of education, science, culture, youth and sport for 2023-2025, as well as Lithuanian-Israeli memorandums on developing cooperation in innovation and cyber security.

Tonight, the Foreign Minister will meet with Ron Dermer, Israel’s Minister for Strategic Affairs, in Tel Aviv.

It is the first official visit by the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy Landsbergis to the State of Israel.
