Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis: “The fight against racism and fascism continues daily. Let’s not be afraid to fight”

On 27 January, together with the whole world, we commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD) and pay our sincere respects to the millions of Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust during World War II, including two hundred thousand Lithuanian citizens.

“The fight against racism and fascism continues daily. We must never be afraid to fight these battles. The consequences of inaction are far more horrific,”  Landsbergis said.

It is impossible to resurrect these innocent victims or find the right words to comfort their loved ones. Still, it is possible to keep their memory alive and do our utmost to ensure that humankind will never again suffer such a tragedy. This day is also a day to thank the saviours of the Jews, the Righteous Among the Nations, whose deeds have preserved the faith in humanity and human conscience.

In 2005, the United Nations proclaimed 27 January as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust (IHRD), the day on which the surviving prisoners of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp were liberated.
