While Chiune Sugihara, the diplomat that issued life visas for Jews escaping the Holocaust, has become the best-known symbol of the connection between Lithuania and Japan (check out our Sugihara route in Kaunas!), the relationship between the two countries started almost 100 years before WW2.
The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania opens a Call for applications for 70 Lithuanian state grants for full-time Master degree or Integrated studies at Lithuanian higher education institutions for the academic year 2018/2019.
The funding under the Call shall be provided to the nationals of the Republic of Ukraine, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Georgia, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Moldova, Japan, the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, the State of Israel and foreigners of Lithuanian origin.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania, the Adelaide Lithuanian community prepared an exceptional gift for Lithuania – preserved personal relics of Lithuanian Presidents.
On February 14, Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania opened 100 year independence anniversary celebrations in Japan with a concert of Maestro Mr Gidon Kremer and the chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica, followed by a reception.
On the 18th of December Hisayuki Sakamizu, General Secretary of Japan-Lithuania Friendship Association (JALFA) for his vast contribution to strengthening Japan-Lithuania ties and promoting Lithuania was awarded Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs award of honour - Lithuanian Diplomacy Star.
On November 11-12, Embassy of Lithuania participated in Akasaka Community Festival in Tokyo.
This time, Lithuanian traditional strawornament „Sodas“ and pictures of beautiful Lithuanian scenery was displayed, as well as „Sodas making workshop“ was held at the booth.
Japanese visitors were fascinated by its beauty and structure of Lithuanian „Sodas“.
Another sodas exhibition and workshop was held on November 16 at Shinjuku Isetan department on November 16, as a part of „ Baltic Lifestyle and Folk“ exhibition, directed by Ms. Saori Matsuda.
A new expanded version of the Sugihara route has just been published. We had no idea the project would outgrow Kaunas when we first published the Japanese-language map dedicated to the legacy of diplomat Chiune Sugihara in September’2016. The map has been since published in English and Lithuanian, too (just in time for the Sugihara Week, our top recommendation this September).
