20 years anniversary of partnership between Lithuania and Japan cities
Kuji (Iwate prefecture, North Japan) and Lithuanian city Klaipeda marked twentieth anniversary of partnership on 19 August. Kuji is the only sister city with Lithuanian city.
The twentieth anniversary was honoured by a concert of Ruta and Zbignevas Ibelhauptas Piano Duo – winners of a National Prize of Lithuanian Culture and Art.
Lithuanian musicians followed their tradition to introduce Lithuanian music to the world. Mykalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis symphony poem “In the Forest“ was performed on the opening of Concert. Ten years ago Lithuanian National symphony orchestra performed the same art work in the same Kuji hall.
On behalf of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania Cultural Attaché Gabija Zukauskiene stated the importance of development of the economical and cultural ties between regions of Lithuanian and Japan.
Lithuanian representatives met Mayor of Kuji Yamauchi Takafumi and discussed future cooperation between two countries regions.
Kuji and Klaipeda partnership began in 1989. After 1991 January 13th events in Lithuania, Mayor of Kuji city condemned military actions of former Soviet Union and lent city support for Lithuania’s way to independence. 1995 World Municipalities Congress in Hague recognised Klaipeda’s and Kuji’s cities cooperation as an example to follow. Congress expressed hope that this cooperation will inspire other Lithuania’s and Japan’s cities to expand their partnership.
In 1997 at the Amber Festival in Kuji collection of Palanga Amber museum was presented. 2002 first Lithuanian restaurant in Japan „Gintaras“ (Amber) was opened.
Delegation of Kuji municipal government, business and art representatives went to Klaipeda for anniversary events. Mayors of Kuji and Klaipeda extended the partnership agreement termless.
